Weekly Roundup 10/1/18

Some damn fine releases this week.

Cat Power left Matador Records for Domino and dropped the sheen from her previous album "Sun" to make something more along the lines of "You Are Free" which is arguably her best album. So this is a nice return to form. There is less of a 70s influence on this one too.

Eric Copeland brought more reliable weirdness to the table. This time around though the focus is more on weirding out the dance floor, which is a very good thing.

Cursive came back after a 6 year break to bring us one of their most vicious releases. There is no theme this time around and Tim Kasher is PISSED at the current state of affairs. I don't blame him and more people should be showing off how pissed they are at the current situation. This is very welcome.

High On Fire came out of the gates kicking ass like they usually do. This time though, they seem extra insane.

LO-FI artist Gregor made his label debut after swimming around Bandcamp for a few years to offer us up a very weird Reggae inspired LO-FI indie rock album. Very much in the vein of Mac DeMarco and Ween.

Album of the week:

Marie Davidson's Working Class Woman really knocked me on my ass. Definitely the weirdest album this week and really one of the weirdest albums of the year. Lot's of creativity on this one. It sounds like a more Electro influenced version of the Experimental Electronic duo MU. She also sounds a lot like the best Ellen Allien stuff. Most of the vocals are spoken word and very often hilarious and a total send up of shitty club culture. She makes fun of a lot of people and lot of things people hold sacred on this one. On one end it seems like a bit of a feminist statement or a send up of that very statement. To be honest I can't really tell. I don't think Marie takes herself too seriously and likes to poke at people, but who knows. All I know is this is a fun, funny and very interesting album.
