Weekly Roundup 9/17/18
Last week was a pretty solid one for new releases. We got new albums from quite a few of the old classic indie rock guard. As well as some welcome returns for a few newer artists. Let's explore a little below shall we?
We got a nice sequel to TFCF by Liars. Apparently these were either outtakes or basically a volume 2 to the last album. It's from the same recording sessions and has the same feel so let's go ahead and call this a successful part 2.
Beak> comes back with a bit of a different sound. Gone is the staunch Krautrock influence and in it's absence we get a weirdo take of pop song structure. Very welcomed and a nice change for this group.
Gazelle Twin gave us a a 4 year wait in between full length proper albums. This one doesn't disappoint and it's just another deep notch in her weird post industrial fucked pop landscape she has crafted for herself.
Album of the week:
Mutual Benefit's Thunder Follows The Light.
This really is a beautiful orchestral indie pop gem. This harkens back to the very best of Sufjan Stevens, but more importantly this comes as close to I have ever heard an album coming to what I consider the cream of the crop of orchestral led indie chamber pop; Jim Guthrie's Now, More Than Ever. That album is the perfect balance between indie rock's lyrical punch and economic musical history and the use of over the top orchestral arrangements. It toed the line perfectly. So does this. There is so much power to the whisp of his voice and it matches the orchestral indie pop background perfectly. This is huge music presented on a tiny scale or it's tiny music served through a grandiose gesture. Either way you look at it, there is a perfect balance struck and we haven't heard orchestral indie pop this good since 2003.
