Monthly Roundup: August 2018
So first off, I have to highlight 3 albums that will definitely be on the end of the year best albums list. They are the following:
Tizah-This is a collaboration between the singer Tirzah and Mica Levi(of Micachu and soundtrack fame). This could be my favorite downtempo alternative R&B album. This is crafted expertly. Mica Levi handles all of the music and creates extremely minimal yet engaging accompaniment to Tizah's wonderful voice. Highly recommended for fans of Mica Levi, Lily Allen and for people who want just a little more out of the trendy Alternative R&B scene.
Idles-This album takes shitty masculine behaviors and utterly destroys them. Every cliche male bullshit trait is taken to task on this thing. They upped the anti on this one by really stretching out and making something so ugly sound so triumphant. This album also has one of the most devastating songs I have ever heard of. The song "June" is about a would be father having a stillborn baby and the lyrics will crush you. This is how punk rock should be done!
Odetta Hartman-This is easily one of the weirdest yet also most successful blending of genres all year. She and her boyfriend take old timey(i'm talking 1800s) music and blend it with pop song structures and all manner of weird sound effects and various noises. It creates a dizzying effect of world's colliding. This is the kind of genre expanding music that needs to happen more often. These are two artists who aren't afraid to "go there".
Other albums of note are:
Amanda Shires excellent take on Americana that blends pop with country and Americana in a non-obnoxious way.
Mitski released a very decent follow up to Puberty 2. She sounds a little more like St. Vincent in parts on this one but also comes into her own voice on quite a few of the tracks. Highly recommended.
Trevor Powers released his first non Youth Lagoon album and it was a nasty ugly noise pop delight!
Interpol came back with a very solid album. They still sound like good ol interpol just with a more solid set of songs this time around.
And finally, Eminem made what I feel to be a great comeback album after a couple of lackluster outings. This one is getting shit on somewhat and I personally feel it's just people being butthurt at the fact that he called out a bunch of people they like for being shitty. He takes cloud and trap rap to task and basically everyone who shit on his last couple of albums. Something which I did but I take no offense to Eminem calling me an asshole for it. Take this music for what it is, great rapping, great disses and a nice return to form.
