The Best Albums From 1967
Now we are in the thick of it. This year is where Rock really took hold. For most people it was all they wanted to listen to. The Beatles were in full on domination mode, as were The Rolling Stones, The Byrds, Cream, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, The Monkees and The Who. Rock was getting more creative and more expansive, incorporating elements or studio trickery to create some of the first instances of blending rock with electronics and further cementing the Psychedelia into the music. The music was heady and made to be thought provoking. Drug culture and the music scene's lines were beginning to blur. Folk was still around at this point but focusing on central characters like Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Leonard Cohen, Tim Buckley, Donovan, Fred Neil, Phil Ochs and Bobbie Gentry over the wide swath of an entire scene. Speaking of Bobbie Gentry, she had the honorable distinction of unseating "Sgt. Pepper's" 15 week reign at the top spot of the billboard charts with her album "Ode To Billie Joe". This year saw some absolutely insane debuts for music careers that will probably last our lifetime. We had monumental debut albums from Captain Beefheart, Leonard Cohen, The Doors, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Jefferson Airplane, The Moody Blues, Nico, Van Dyke Parks, Pink Floyd and arguably most importantly The Velvet Underground. We also start to see the first instance of Prog Rock sneaking it's crazy head into the musical landscape in the form The Moody Blues and Pink Floyd and actually most of the artists on this lists work. Jazz seemed to be waning in popular opinion, country was slowing down as well(for the moment) and full on electronic albums made one of their first appearances with Morton Subotnik's Silver Apples Of The Moon. These were crazy musical times and I am happy to share them with you! Stay tuned for 1968 next!
