The Best Albums Of The 2000s-Part 7 2006
Due to my want to get this post out there I wanted to post
it in an incomplete form. As you may notice, my commentary is missing from most
of the entries. I felt for the sake of keeping on track that my words can wait
for the moment. What's really important is the list and highlighting the art
that these musicians made. Therefore I am releasing this list in an incomplete
state! You don't need my words! Go listen to the tunes!!!!!
1. Liars-Drum's Not Dead(Mute)
This was the last truly excellent Liars album. This was not
as harsh and off-putting as the first one. Where it lacked the same edginess of
the previous album this one more than made up for it with a total fully
realized vision and a complete laser sharp focus. For this album they decided
to focus on percussion. They recorded multiple drum tracks and played them in a
very tribal style. The drums absolutely pound on this album. It felt like they
were trying to conjure up the feeling of what music was like before the advent
of recordings and songs. There are guitars but they are used mainly for texture
instead of notes. Each track has an ebb and a flow and instead of normal song
structure these feel like pieces to the greater whole. Overall this album was a
masterpiece for the Liars and a masterpiece in concept that was executed
perfectly.
Genre: Experimental Rock, Art Rock, Noise Rock, No Wave,
Tribal Ambient, Post-Rock
2. Harvey Milk-Special Wishes(Troubleman Unlimited)\
Amazing album of classic rock influenced sludge metal. The
album cover kind of perfectly sums up the sound of this album. It's classic
rock surrounded by blacks and grays. It's punishing stuff really and it's made
even better by the fact that there is always a great melody underneath each
track.
Genre: Sludge Metal, Noise Rock
3. Clipse-Hell Hath No Fury(Star Trak)
Even crazier than "Lord Willin'" which seems
insane because that album was ridiculous. The Neptunes production on this is
pretty absurd, they were making hard hitting beats out of the most minimal
ridiculous samples. This managed to be completely in the mainstream while
sounding like nothing else at the time. No one at the time was willing to use beats
like this and we have a masterpiece because Pusha T and No Malice did.
Genre: Southern Hip Hop, Gangsta Rap
4. The Blow-Paper Television(K)
Same concept as the above album except this time, it's the
other way around. Underground indie pop duo make an album by ripping beats and
tricks straight from the mainstream pop world and make it their own. This album
has a very nice feminist bent to it. YACHT's production is pretty much
flawless. It has a lot in common with Neptunes production. Tinny synths bump up
against heavy bass and all manner of weird samples to create a dancy crazy
indie pop album.
Genre: Indietronica, Indie Rock, Electropop
5. The Knife-Silent Shout(Mute)
I would say this album is the greatest electroclash album of
all time. It's not really even considered to be an electroclash album but they
ended up accidentally making what I think is the tip top of that genre. This
brother sister duo created an extremely dark and twisted electronic album. My
favorite element of the entire album is the female vocals that are
pitch-shifted and bent to basically create an androgynous narrator. It adds a
very ambiguous and mysterious vibe to the whole proceedings.
Genre: Electropop, Synthpop, Minimal Techno, Art Pop
6. Grizzly Bear-Yellow House(Warp)
Genre: Psychedelic Folk, Indie Folk, Chamber Pop
